In the spirit of the holidays, the staff at Doucet McBride LLP once again donated time and money to the Ottawa Food Bank, CHEO and the Ottawa Mission. The staff raised over $700.00 for CHEO, through bake sales, raffles and other fundraising throughout the year.

Laurie Tucker attended the awards ceremony during the Brain Injury Association of Canada’s Annual Conference, in Charlottetown, PEI, where she accepted an award on behalf of the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association (OTLA) for their work on the Helmets on Kids program. The Helmets on Kids program is run in various areas throughout the province every spring. Local OTLA lawyers raise funds in order to purchase and distribute helmets to elementary school children. Every spring, on behalf of OTLA, our personal injury group distributes hundreds of helmets to elementary school children in all four Ottawa Boards. In July 2011, Laurie Tucker and Éliane Lachaîne won a trial on behalf of a young female injured 10 years earlier in a car accident. The judge determined that the young female’s difficulties, namely a dependency to narcotic medication and a significant level of psychological dysfunction, were caused or materially contributed to, by the car accident. As a result, the insurer was required to pay the young female an amount in excess of $195,00 0.00, plus costs, for outstanding accident benefits, more than half of which was interest owing in accordance with the SABS.

The inaugural session of John Hollander’s Advanced Advocacy Club was held. John has introduced an Advanced Advocacy Club aimed at allowing young litigators (both inside and outside Doucet McBride) to learn and practice examination and cross-examination skills. John’s Advanced Advocacy Club has also been approved by the Law Society of Upper Canada for Continuing Professional Development credits.

In an effort to support the Ottawa Food Bank, Doucet McBride will participate in May in the “Lunch Money Day” where the lawyers and staff will bring their lunch and donate their lunch money. We will also hold a bake sale and collect non-perishable food items.

National Denim Day
This is the 5th year that Doucet McBride LLP will be participating in the National Denim Day in support of Cure Foundation to raise money to find a cure for breast cancer. We each donate $5.00 to the cause and wear denim to work on May 10. To show our involvement, we all wear pink ribbons for the day.

The Financial Loss Advisory Group of Doucet McBride commenced a second class action against a financial planner in Barrie, Ontario together with co-counsel, Thomson Rogers. In this action, 2 disabled people with few assets were persuaded to borrow $100,000 to invest in mutual funds. When the market dropped, they still owed $100,000, but there mutual funds were worth far less. They are unable to repay the debt. They represent many other families who, according to the claim, were approached by the same financial planner with the same scheme in mind.

John Hollander launched his fourth session of the Advocacy Club. The Advocacy Club is a group of several articling students and new lawyers that meet weekly to take part in exercises such as examinations in chief, cross examinations, and much more. John is currently working on publishing a book entitled “How Lawyers Ask Questions."
John has also been asked to co-teach the intensive session of Trial Advocacy course at the University of Ottawa in January 2012.
